O que é um comendador e qual a sua função ?

Comenda é uma condecoração concedida a pessoas que se destacam em suas áreas de atuação, desde artistas, políticos e empresários até esportistas. Quando surgiu na Idade Média, a recompensa tinha um significado bem diferente. Naquele tempo, a comenda era um benefício dado a membros do clero ou a militares que demonstravam valentia em batalhas.
"Geralmente, a comenda era algo valioso, como o título de propriedade de uma terra. Com o passar dos séculos, seu valor tornou-se simbólico, representado por diplomas ou medalhas", afirma Waldemar Baroni, heraldista (especialista em títulos e emblemas da nobreza) do Conselho Estadual de Honrarias e Mérito de São Paulo (CEHM). Se antes o comendador tinha a obrigação de defender a terra recebida contra inimigos, hoje ele não tem função definida. No máximo, a distinçáo confere algum prestígio em certos círculos sociais. Mesmo assim, o título sobrevive no cerimonial de governos e instituições privadas, que seguem uma hierarquia de acordo com a importância do homenageado.
"O menor grau é cavaleiro, seguido de oficial, comendador, grande oficial, grão-cruz e, quando existe, grão-colar".
